2006 年6月上旬，VMware Infrastructure 3 带着它崭新的虚拟技术在全球正式发布了。这个VMware 公司迄今最大的版本，加入了它的独特的具有革命性的虚拟技术，来优化和管理当今的IT技术环境，为它已经相当成熟并占有绝对优势的虚拟软件市场锦上添花。
与 VMware 之前的版本 ESX Server 2.5 和 Virtual Center 1相比，新的 VMware Infrastructure 3 套装软件 Mware Infrastructure 3 套状软件整合了Virtual Center 2 管理工具、ESX Server3 产品，VMFS 分散档案系统软件，以及全新的 Distributed Resource Scheduler、High Availability 和 Consolidated
Backup 等。在整个服务器的底层硬件、AS/OS 和后台存储技术上都有了更大的突破。另外在延展性上也更完善了，在每个服务器上，VMware Infrastructure 3 支持的逻辑 CPU 高达 32 个，支持的内存高达 64GB，并且支持 SAN、NAS和iSCSI SAN。支持四路的 Virtual SMP 技术使得单个的虚拟机可以最多同时使用4个处理器，最多支持16GB 内存。此外，VirtualCenter 2 现在可管理3倍的主机和虚拟机。
☆ VMware Distributed Resource Scheduler (DRS) 可以在从硬件资源聚集到逻辑资源 池的过程中实现动态的合理的分配资源和不断平衡不同应用程序的优先权。
☆ VMware High Availability (HA) 可以在一台物理机发生故障时，自动的将该物理机上 所有虚拟机动态的迁移到另外一台正常的机器上继续运行。
☆ VMware Consolidated Backup 可以直接在底层的 Virtulization 层 上进行数据的备份， 避免了在每台虚拟机上进行备份，从而极大的改善了IT资源的管理。
☆ 支持更多的操作系统和硬件平台。

VMware Infrastructure 3有3个版本： 面向中小企业的 Infrastructure Starter，适用于公司的部门级环境的 Infrastructure Standard 以及面向大企业的 Infrastructure Enterprise。
